The post-human brief

Six rules

A design for a world where people and technology are more aligned than they have ever been. Here is the uncomfortable part of that question: almost every visual language we have for "the future" was built to depict misalignment.

Heads-up displays, targeting reticles, telemetry, warning lamps, hazard chevrons, surveillance overlays, red alert. That furniture exists because the machine was an adversary, or a hazard, or a thing being aimed. Cyberpunk is the aesthetics of a bad relationship.

So the first move isn't to add futurity. It's to subtract the furniture of distrust and find out what is left holding the page up. These six rules are what remained.

Nothing warns

Where no part of a system is adversarial, no part of it needs an alarm state. Emphasis is carried by position, weight and rule — the tools that work in a book — and never by borrowing the vocabulary of danger.

In practice

Saturated warning hues are held in reserve for things that are genuinely urgent. On a blog, nothing is.

Seams, not seamlessness

Seamless design hides agency, and hidden agency is what you cannot audit. A system worth trusting shows its joins: what was revised, what is uncertain, what a machine contributed and where.

In practice

Marginalia carries provenance. Revision history lives in the page. Null results get a mark of their own.

Two readers, one document

Alignment as a literal property of layout: legible to a person at sixty-six characters and structurally parseable by a machine, with neither degraded for the other.

Labels in plain words rather than codes, because a plain word is the one encoding both readers already share.

Continuity with deep time

The radical gesture isn't rupture. It's that an 1843 cyanotype plate and a document from 2140 use the same grammar, because the grammar was right. Post-human is not post-history.

The reference set is two centuries of scientific publishing. Plate numbering, figure references, hanging indents, captions that say what a thing is.

Things that age

Software's native tense is an eternal present: perpetually new, no patina, no trace of having been used. Instruments accrete. A design that can age asserts that the system has a past and expects a future.

Persistence and decay are real mechanics — afterglow, halftone erosion, the latent image that holds what it was shown until something reads it out.

Pigment, not RGB

Every colour names a substance with a chemistry and a date. The constraint is on the designer, not the reader: a hue that has to justify itself as a material cannot drift into a trend.

The system

Three layers

The identity is a printed plate: a grid, a numbering scheme, a type pairing, two rule weights, corner registration marks, and captions in tabular mono. That core is medium-blind.

It renders as ink on bone in a paper, as light on ink in a browser, as vinyl on cotton on a shirt. The screen treatment — afterglow, grain, live drawing — sits on top as a finish, applied where there is a backlight to apply it to. Underneath both sits the site's existing machinery, which this proposal does not touch.

Phosphor plate is a real instrument: a storage plate that holds a latent image until a laser reads it out. Printed and glowing, one object.

Test of the system

If a rule cannot be stated in a way a LaTeX package could obey, it belongs in the finish, not the core.

The chrome is eight named parts. Each holds one kind of information and appears in one place, which is what lets a reader learn the page once.

Pigment

Cyanotype, with a sibling

Colour selection runs on one rule: a hue must name a substance with a chemistry and a date. Two systems survive that test and earn a place — one for the Pen, one for work that needs to sit beside it without being it.

Cyanotype

Ferric ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide, exposed to sun and washed in water. Anna Atkins used it in 1843 for the first book ever illustrated photographically — algae specimens, printed as plates. A pigment that is already a scientific document.

Verdigris

Antiquity · copper acetateSibling

What copper does when you leave it out. A mineral green — blue-leaning, desaturated, the colour of a roof rather than a highlighter. Retained as the second system so Symby work can run the same grammar in a distinct hue.

The strike and the settle

You asked whether P7's blue — the fourth swatch in that ramp, #8fb6ff — could live inside cyanotype. It can, and there is a form of it that is better than a swap.

Taking it as the print colour would break the rule that just selected the palette. Prussian blue is a real ink and it is decidedly cyan-leaning; P7's periwinkle is a phosphor emission spectrum, the light zinc sulphide gives off when an electron hits it. Putting an emission where an ink goes is exactly the drift the substance rule exists to prevent.

But the Latent register isn't ink. Nothing on a screen is pigment; it is a surface emitting, and P7 is the historically correct emission for a blue tube. So:

On screen, a mark strikes as light and settles into ink. New strokes arrive at the P7 blue. As they persist they resolve toward #0f4c81 — the exact Prussian blue that same mark would be if it were printed. The cover field is doing this now; switch to Latent and watch the tails.

This is also chemically true of the process it's named for. A cyanotype develops: the coated sheet is a dull yellow-green, exposure turns it a weak grey-blue, and it oxidises to full Prussian over the following day. The print is not finished when you take it out of the water.

It generalises, which is the test of a good rule. In any system, the Latent decay tone is that system's Plate pigment. Verdigris strikes at #7fe0c2 and settles to #2f6b5e. One sentence covers both, and any future system inherits it for free.

In the Plate register the two tones are the same value, so the field renders monochrome and the mechanic disappears. That is the correct behaviour: paper does not decay in the ten seconds you are looking at it.

Roles

Mark The accent. Plate numbers, figure references, category eyebrows, registration marks, links.
Settle What the mark ages into. Equals the mark in Plate; equals the Plate pigment in Latent.
Ground Bone stock or a warm near-black. Never pure white, never pure black.
Ink Headlines and emphasis. Carries a little of the pigment's hue so the page reads as one substance.
Body Running prose. The single most-used value on the site and the one to tune last.
Rule Separation. Two weights only: a hairline for grouping, two pixels for a real boundary.
Discipline

One pigment per artifact. Mark and Settle are one colour at two ages, not two colours — which is why the rule survives contact with a printer, where there is only ever one plate of ink beyond black.

Three faces, three jobs

Three roles, one face each. The split is what lets the monospace mean something — it appears only where a machine produced the value, so its presence is information rather than decoration.

A latent image holds what it was shown and gives nothing back until something reads it out. You expose the plate and see nothing; the energy sits in the lattice, waiting. Then a laser sweeps it and the whole thing returns its light at once. It is a printed object and a glowing one, and the argument of this document is that a page can be the same.

Cost. Three self-hosted faces, subset to the glyphs in use, come to roughly 120 KB — under half of what the Laika JSON costs today. Syne and Literata are OFL via Google Fonts; Departure Mono is OFL from its author. All three can be vendored into the repo, so there is no third-party request at runtime and the no-CDN position holds.

Two registers

Both primary — neither is a fallback

One design, two states of the same material. The layout, the grid, the numbering and the type are identical in both; what changes is whether the page is reflecting light or emitting it.

Ink on bone. The printed register — papers, figures, anything read on paper or projected in a lit room. One pigment, no second tone, no glow. The austerity is the point: on paper, a second hue almost always means the hierarchy failed to work with position and weight.

Latent

Light on ink. The read-out register — the site at night, decks in a dark room. A second tone is permitted here because a screen has a dimension paper doesn't: things can decay. The second tone is what the first ages into, not a decorative partner.

Note — the page opens in whichever register matches the reader's system theme, and the console overrides it. That is the intended behaviour on the site too: follow the reader, let them argue.

§01Preamble

There is a habit on the left of treating technology as something that happens to people rather than something people do, and it has cost us the only myth we ever had about it. Prometheus did not organize a strike. He stole a working artifact and handed it over.

The distinction matters because the two politics diverge almost immediately. One asks who owns the fire. The other asks whether anyone still knows how to make it.

§02The gift and the liver

Hesiod is careful about the sequence. The theft comes first, then the punishment, then — and this is the part that gets dropped — the fire stays. Nothing in the myth suggests it is ever taken back.

Anatomy and asset standards

The system's real test. A reviewer seeing your paper and a reader seeing your blog should recognise the same hand without either looking costumed.

The sheet follows the console. Under Plate it is ink on bone; under Latent it is a dark reader page — which is not a novelty, since almost every paper is now read on a screen and most of them at night.

Latent image storage in disordered lattices

Abstract

We characterise readout fidelity across three storage geometries and show that error-diffused sampling recovers tone structure lost to uniform quantisation at equivalent bit depth. The advantage holds for ordered and partially disordered lattices and disappears entirely under full disorder — a null we report in §4 rather than omit, since it bounds the claim.

1Introduction

A storage phosphor holds a latent image as trapped electrons in a crystal lattice. Readout sweeps the plate with a laser and counts the photons released. Fidelity therefore depends on how the traps are arranged, which is a question about the lattice rather than about the optics (Atkins, 1843; Herschel, 1842).

Prior work assumes an ordered lattice. We relax that assumption in three stages and measure what survives.

2Method

Each geometry was sampled at matched bit depth. Let φ be the trap occupancy and λ the readout wavelength; recovered structure S is then

with σ the local disorder parameter. Full derivation in the appendix.

3Results

Error diffusion outperformed uniform quantisation in the ordered and partially disordered cases (Δ = 0.61, 0.44). Under full disorder the difference fell inside the equivalence band.

4Null register

Three of the seven pre-registered comparisons resolved null. They are listed with the same weight as the effects, because a bounded claim is more useful than a broad one.

Null results

The one place this system takes a real position. A null is a result with a mark of its own, never an absence. Nulls get lost because the conventions for them are all subtractive — a blank cell, a greyed row, a sentence in the discussion.

Three devices, used together. All three keep the null in the pigment; none of them greys it, because grey reads as "less important" and that is the exact misreading to prevent.

Citations and references

Author–year in prose, set in the pigment so the eye can skip them. The reference list hangs by one em with the year in pigment, which makes chronological scanning possible without numbering.

A blue underlined URL is a screen convention printed onto paper where it cannot be clicked, and it wrecks the colour discipline for no benefit. Instead the phrase stays in ink with a pigment rule beneath it, and the address goes to a numbered note.

One file, three targets

Everything above resolves to a single source. When the pigment moves, it moves in the site, the paper template and the deck theme at once — which is the only version of brand consistency that survives contact with actual work.

The substance field is not documentation. It is the constraint from rule six, written where a future you will see it before picking a colour because it looked good in a screenshot.

Notesettle is identical in both registers by construction: it is the printed pigment. That single line is what makes the strike-and-settle rule generalise to any future system.
